Book Reviews

I exist in a culture that is completely self-absorbed and narcissistic…I’m not referring to America though…I’m talking about the church! We have departed from the truth about who we are and have become something other than what God intended for us as those made in His image. The Vertical Self is a course corrector that steers the reader back toward his true identity. We are being called upward from eternity forward.

Thomas Nelson Publishing provided me with a complimentary copy of the book, The Vertical Self by Mark Sayers. This is the first title I’ve ever read by Mr. Sayers but I can say with confidence that he just went on my list of favorite authors. As a pastor, I ate this book up and spit it out with gusto…simply put--this book preaches. Mr. Sayers does a fabulous job of building to a crescendo of powerful thoughts. Whereas a lot of books of this genre lose steam after 3 or 4 chapters, to skip the later parts of this book would be to miss the quintessential elements and most powerful truths. This book challenged me, inspired me, and provoked me. Thanks Mark, I needed this.
